ASEAN and Partners lead the way in Bioeconomy Development

14 March 2024, representatives from BIOTEC-NSTDA and FAO came together with the ASEAN Sectoral Development to explore potential collaboration on bioeconomy initiatives. Among the attendees were Mr. Illias Animon from FAO RAP, Dr. Warinthorn Songkasiri, Director of the Biochemical Engineering and Systems Biology Research Group, Ms. Seetala Jamlerkjaeng, Director Of International Cooperation And Public Relations Division, and Ms. Sarinda Kanjanakhot, International Relations Officer at BIOTEC, Thailand, along with researchers Dr. Sivalee Trakulvichien, Dr. Ruenrom Lerdlattaporn, and Ms. Narisa Chokmongkol from the ASEAN Cassava Centre. The focal point of the meeting was the project 'Advancing Bioeconomy in ASEAN: Promoting Sustainability and Partnerships with Insights and Experience from Thailand'. Discussions revolved around potential contributions from ASEAN to regional bioeconomy activities.
 
Dr. Kanchana Wanichkorn, Director of Sectoral Development at the ASEAN Economic Community, introduced ASEAN's latest initiative for economic growth, the 'Blue Economy'. This holistic approach integrates various sectors and stakeholders to create value-added resources from oceans, seas, and freshwater sustainably. It encompasses sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, renewable energy, biotechnology, and marine research and education, among others.
