Pioneering Leaf Spot Disease-Resistant Cassava Varieties in Thailand

Cassava, the first leaf spot disease-resistant variety in Thailand, was developed by the Cassava Development Institute of Thailand under the leadership of Professor Dr. Charoensak Rojanaritpichet, Chairman of the committee, and Mr. Boonmee Wattanaruangrong, committee member. Seedlings of three resistant varieties were received from the resistance breeding project led by Professor Dr. Aet Sarobon, Associate Professor Dr. Chalermphon Phumchai, Assistant Professor Dr. Phatsajee Kongsil, and their research team at Kasetsart University's Faculty of Agriculture. On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the Cassava Development Institute in Huai Bong Subdistrict, Dan Khun Thot District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, the team implemented plant disease control methods to manage leaf spot disease. In 2019, three species— IITA-TMS-IB980581, TMEB419, and IITA-TMS-IB920057— were identified by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) as having high resistance to leaf spot disease, along with notable yields and flour production. In 2023, the Institute Foundation plans to further propagate these three varieties to expand their cultivation.
