Achieving Sustainable Shrimp Farming through an Ecotechnology Approach
Dr. Sorawit Powtongsook | Wednesday, 5 February 2025 | 2:00 PM (Bangkok time)
Join us for an enlightening discussion on sustainable shrimp farming in Thailand through the lens of ecotechnology. Learn how this innovative approach achieves profitable outcomes with minimal investment. Dr. Powtongsook will share insights on natural processes in shrimp ponds that maintain optimal water quality, highlighting how ecological management drives pond dynamics and shrimp growth. Discover how earthen pond cultivation can be conducted without water exchange for 3–4 months, minimizing wastewater discharge and chemical use while promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.
Dr. Sorawit Powtongsook brings over 25 years of expertise in aquaculture research, specializing in aquatic science and biotechnology. As Director of the Integrative Aquaculture Biotechnology Research Group at BIOTEC, his research focuses on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), nitrogen waste treatment, microbiomes, and aquatic environments. His groundbreaking work includes developing RAS prototypes for fish and shrimp cultivation. Recently, he has championed "ecotechnology" aquaculture, conducting in-depth research on nitrogen waste carrying capacity and establishing a sustainable shrimp cultivation prototype at the "Song Nam" demonstration farm in collaboration with the Chaipattana Foundation, Thailand.
