How innovative tomato breeding is advancing Thailand's bioeconomy through enhanced quality and disease resistance.
Join us on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, to discover how innovative tomato breeding is advancing Thailand's bioeconomy through enhanced quality and disease resistance.
This talk will address Thailand's significant reliance on imported tomatoes and the challenges faced in local tomato cultivation. Dr. Orawan's team has developed two groundbreaking tomato varieties: Red Garnet (PC3) and Sunshine (PC11). These disease-resistant varieties offer enhanced sweetness, crispness, and fewer seeds, with yields reaching 5 tons per rai. Learn how this initiative aims to boost local production, potentially reducing Thailand's dependence on imported tomatoes and fostering sustainable agriculture.
Our featured speaker, Dr. Orawan Chatchawankanphanich, is the Director of the Integrative Crop Biotechnology and Management Research Group, BIOTEC-NSTDA. With extensive experience in plant virus research and innovative breeding techniques, Dr. Orawan has made significant contributions to Thailand's agricultural sector, including the development of disease-resistant tomato lines that earned the Honorable Mention Invention Award 2017 from the National Research Council of Thailand.
