Agricultural Waste Management for Sustainable Food Production workshop

 

July 10, 2023, Dr. Warinthorn Songkasiri, Head of the Director of Biochemical Engineering and Systems Biology Research Group at BIOTEC-NSTDA, Thailand, was invited as a speaker at the FFTC-Food and Fertilizer Technology Center Workshop on "Agricultural Waste Management for Sustainable Food Production." The workshop, jointly organized by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST PCAARRD), and FFTC, aims to provide a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences in agricultural waste management to promote sustainable food production. It also seeks to raise awareness about the importance of reducing environmental impacts and creating sustainable food systems.
 
This hybrid workshop consisted of four sessions:
(1) Utilization of Wastes as an Untapped Resource for Sustainable Food Systems
(2) Technological Innovations in Agricultural Waste Management
(3) Economic and Policy Aspects of Agricultural Waste Management
(4) Panel discussion: Waste Management for Increasing Sustainability and Income – Challenges and Solutions.
 
Dr. Warinthorn had the opportunity to present and share her work, which spans over the past 20 years, in building an international community that supports the sustainable development of the cassava value chain, particularly in the ASEAN region. This region accounts for 90% of the global cassava export. The title of her talk was "Community of Practice - Sustainable Cassava Value Chain through Knowledge and Technology Transfer in Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Myanmar."
