Thailand's Cassava Exports Take a Hit in 2023 Due to Drough
Thailand's cassava and cassava product exports are anticipated to reach 9 million tonnes this year, down from the previous year's 11 million tonnes, as a result of reduced output caused by a severe drought. The Foreign Trade Department, under the Ministry of Commerce, reported high demand for tapioca and its products from Thailand; however, this year's production has been hampered by drought conditions. Farmers are advised not to hastily harvest small cassava roots during periods of high prices, as it may affect overall quality. In the first five months of 2023, Thailand exported 4.73 million tonnes of cassava and cassava products, marking a 21% drop in volume and a 19% decline in value year-on-year. China continues to be Thailand's primary export market, accounting for 65% of the total. To meet demand, Thailand is expected to import approximately 2.4 million tonnes of cassava chips from neighboring countries such as Laos and Cambodia.
