Cambodia has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China to facilitate the direct export of cashew nuts, cassava, and edible bird's nests, aiming to eliminate intermediary trade routes and expedite market access. The Ministry of Information announced this agreement on 27 September 2024.
The MoU was signed between three Cambodian associations—the Cambodian Cashew Association, the Cambodian Edible Bird's Nest Association, and the Cambodian Cassava Coalition—and the Chinese Customs Administration during a ceremony in Nanning, Guangxi Province. This initiative is anticipated to substantially increase the export volume of these key agricultural products, thereby enhancing revenue for Cambodian farmers and traders.
Mr. Suy Kok Thean, President of the Khmer Edible Bird's Nest Association, underscored that China represents the largest market for processed bird's nests. He projected that the agreement would lead to higher prices due to the establishment of direct trade routes. Previously, Cambodia's edible bird's nests were primarily exported through Vietnam and Thailand before reaching China. Similarly, Uon Siloth, President of the Cambodian Cashew Association, noted that cashew nuts had to pass through third countries before entering the Chinese market. He emphasized that this agreement would benefit local farmers by simplifying export procedures and increasing their profit margins.
