Cambodia Plans Major Cassava Export to China

Cambodia is gearing up to export 500,000 tonnes of dried cassava directly to China by December, according to Chuo Makara, president of the Union of Safe Vegetable Agriculture Cooperative of Cambodia. Negotiations with Chinese companies since 2022 have focused on meeting requirements and addressing challenges. While the price for exporting dried cassava to China isn't substantially higher than to neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand, opening this market is crucial for Cambodian cassava farmers. Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, Dith Tina, is supportive of this export initiative and is encouraging Chinese investment in other potential products like rice, cashews, and Pailin longan. Cambodia aims to shift from traditional to commercial cassava production, ensuring sustainable agriculture practices, climate resilience, and increased trade competitiveness, as outlined in the National Cassava Policy 2020-2025.
