The International Conference “Sustainable development of cassava in Vietnam”

The Vietnam Cassava Association, in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Tay Ninh province, hosted the International Conference on Sustainable Development of Cassava in Vietnam on January 15, 2015. The conference convened around 300 professionals, scientists, and business representatives. Cassava, recognized as a crucial food crop, ranks fourth in agricultural exports after coffee, rice, and cashew nuts.

Tay Ninh province, boasting over 50,000 hectares of cassava cultivation, leads in productivity among Vietnamese provinces. The province is home to 72 cassava processing factories, witnessing a 3.4-fold increase in cassava starch exports from 2010 to 2014. The conference deliberated on various aspects, including cultivation, processing, trade, export, and environmental sustainability.

Dr. Nguyen Van Lang, Chairman of the Vietnam Cassava Association, emphasized the significance of cassava in Vietnam's agricultural sector, highlighting its continuous yield improvement, particularly in high-yielding varieties like KM94. Cassava, thriving mainly in mountainous areas, enjoys favorable growth conditions and requires low cultivation costs. With a focus on stability, Dr. Lang proposed measures such as sustainable land planning, enhanced varieties, and advanced processing technologies. He stressed the importance of governmental support in policy, finance, technology, and branding to establish cassava as a prominent agricultural export for Vietnam.
